Ergo-Energy

Can we motivate the potential human energy that rests on long distant flights?

Stephanie Straatman, Hannelore Zühlke

On an average transatlantic flight there are about 300 people resting = 100 WATT x 300 = 30000 WATT body heat. It’s a great challenge to find a way to collect this energy.
At the same time it is important that people should move their limbs for ergonomic and health reasons.

Achievement
With this project we want to stimulate people to transform their energy into something for their own or other people's amusement. They will be rewarded for their effort. The accommodation is built of movable parts that can be moved by its occupant. The more the traveler moves these parts the more the battery will be charged. This battery can be used for different causes like uploading a MP3 player, gaining watching time for a movie for yourself or anyone else on the plane, e.g. your elderly grandmother, your sister with a broken leg…

Prototype

We made a massage chair as an example how you can transform your physical activity in a benefit for yourself. The longer you pedal the longer the chair will massage your back.

Potential

This application can be used for chairs in any kind of vehicle used to travel over long distances, as well as any office chair or even your sofa chair to watch TV.
