Connect the Plots
A workshop with environmental engineering students as part of the field work of the Institute for Ecology, Berlin University of Technology.
Around the Bieselfließ area north of Berlin, three different soil sites were surveyed and charted: forest, agricultural field and moor. Then, learnings from the survey were discussed and evaluated in a playful embodiment, showing the relationships between students and the soils in scientific, ecological, socio-political and personal perspectives.
From these observations students communicated their discoveries and conclusions to non-experts, using any medium such as sculpting, sound, theatre play, storytelling, illustration etc.
Students then acted as soil particles that get squashed by tractors and soil compaction, performed the path of a water particle, painted a weather station with soil, enacted a poem about landscape, magnified molecules in a jar or filmed themselves as human boring rods getting hammered into the ground.
